L&T Safety Rules

The most important of these smart initiatives is BIM for Safety, which is changing the way EHS works. Consisting of 3D models integrated with data and information, BIM has been a great platform to share resources and improve coordination. This revolutionary technology is used to improve workplace safety by identifying and mitigating risks and driving a paradigm shift in EHS performance. Another important safety-related digital initiative has been the introduction of barcodes for integral seat belts, which not only take into account any life-saving device, but also make its regular inspection safe and effective. Our ultimate digital vision is the “connected worker” that can be “felt” with wearables, which can play a crucial role in keeping them safe. Various SSE related events such as Road Safety Week, National Safety Day, World Environment Day, Chemical Disaster Prevention Day and L&T Safety Day are observed to ensure that individuals are made aware of the various demands of the industry. We have established a safety committee called SAFAL (Safe and Accident Free Always) that regularly reviews EHS performance and ensures the implementation of safety best practices and regulations at CMB, with a focus on continuous improvement of safety operations. At L&T, we have always been committed to the health and safety of our employees. We were among the first to start reporting safety data in our sustainability reports. Today, new technologies are opening up a new dimension of safety in our workplaces. Our ultimate digital vision is the “connected worker” that can be “felt” with wearables, which can play a crucial role in keeping them safe.

Sensors and beacons on workers can detect altitude, temperature and other environmental conditions and monitor vital signs such as heart rate, pulse, blood pressure and fatigue. Using various AI models and methods, appropriate alarms can be generated in real time to prevent incidents. Work in this area is at an experimental stage, as we strive to find the best solutions in the near future. Digitalization is widely used in all areas of L&T business as a key factor in improving security performance. It is used to create e-learning modules on project sites and to develop training modules based on virtual reality. It also plays a key role in the design of safety cards to report unsafe actions/conditions, incident investigations, safety inspections, improved safe operating procedures (SOPs) to adapt to changing working methods, EHS suggestion systems; just to name a few. A digital tour of a combination of hardware (smart glass) and software solutions is used to observe project progress, safety, quality, worker well-being and remote management. RFID and BLE technologies are used at several specific sites to identify workers at their assigned locations and warn them of intrusion into hazardous areas. A comprehensive database that records workers` certifications and expertise will be created to enable the deployment of the right resources for the right jobs and improve safety and productivity.

To ensure proper compliance with safety processes, the security application, which is used at all our project sites, has digitized all security processes such as launch safety, pre-launch inspections, reporting and resolution of near misses and incidents. This security application has been deployed at scale and is used by more than 15,000 on-site employees. The data in this application enables real-time online safety reviews, and the analysis of this data helps identify trends and patterns for effective corrective actions and improvements. Good security starts with awareness and training, and we use innovative digital technologies to deliver such training to our employees. L&T has developed films that use immersive virtual reality and augmented reality to demonstrate safety practices that cover multiple scenarios, such as working at heights, handling, managing heavy vehicles, working at excavation sites, working with HV lines, security barricades, work permits and working in a marine environment. These films, translated into several Indian languages, help create a vivid and immersive experience and firmly anchor safety rules in the minds of workers. Safety is our core value. We are committed to achieving safety excellence so that we don`t harm anyone associated with us. We continue to improve our processes through digitalization, demonstrate leadership in building HSE capabilities, and ensure compliance with HSE corporate policies and our HSE management system framework.

L&T is committed to providing a safe and healthy workplace at all sites and project locations. Our ambition as an organization is to ensure that every task, work or assignment is carried out securely. Our security systems are extended to contractors working in our facilities and we encourage our suppliers to implement security management on their premises. We have 10 mandatory golden safety rules that are followed by all employees and contractors. These rules are formulated on the basis of the mapping of high-risk activities. The rules set out simple and clear “do`s and don`ts” that cover high-risk activities and are considered safety-critical and do not tolerate deviations. Strict compliance with these rules is ensured by the management system not only for employees, but also for contract workers. With the help of digital technologies, we develop proactive and planned safety programs that, together with environment and health, form the core of our EHS system – an integral function of the organization.
