Georgana Bond, his beloved wife of more than 50 years, endowed the scholarship with a $50,000 donation to the law school, which was later doubled by an anonymous donor. The scholarship provides $5,000 in annual support to a selected student. Bond offers a pre-legal experience specifically designed for a semester of study abroad for U.S. students who plan to enter their Juris Doctor at a U.S. law school. The experience offered as part of your bachelor`s degree will give you an initial understanding of legal concepts from a U.S. and Australian common law perspective. All this is the reason why the deposit system has undergone such a thorough critical treatment in recent years. Bond has worked to make promoting diversity, equity and inclusion in law school an institutional priority. Bond is a faculty member of the Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies program and the Africana curriculum. She has served on the Presidential Research Committee, the Deans` Research Committee, the Law Deans Research Committee, and a number of other university-wide committees. Bond was also the only law school representative on the Chair`s Strategic Planning Steering Committee and Chair of that committee`s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Subcommittee. My first impressions when I started were that it`s really an amazing campus and that everyone has been so supportive of me. Bond is more than a university, it`s a culture and a family. This year alone, Illinois became the first state to pass statewide bail reform. In a landmark criminal justice reform law, the state is phasing out the use of cash deposits and finally ending it on January 1, 2023. Instead of being released on bail, a judge must impose on a defendant the least restrictive conditions necessary to ensure his or her appearance in court. Under the law, courts can also provide reminders of hearing dates and even transportation dates to hearing dates. Australian law degrees are also recognised for professional admission in Sabah and Sarawak; and Bond University LLB is one of many Australian legal degrees recognised by the Malaysian Legal Profession Qualifying Board for professional admission in West Malaysia. Malaysians form the second largest international group within the Faculty of Law. A large number of Bond LLB graduates now practice law in Malaysia. Sabah and Sarawak Secondary Schools participate in the Bond Secondary School Moot Court Competition. Faced with these high costs, our deposit system offers no real advantage.
It does not reduce the threat of flight or community. (Studies show that people in remand do not pose the risks of absconding or violence that we so often use to justify the release of a particular person on bail or our bail system as a whole.) And it serves no criminal interest. (After all, people in pre-trial detention are innocent by definition. They were only charged, not convicted.) In other words, there`s really no good reason for this. American students are sometimes surprised to learn that in Australia, students can study as students for a law degree. As the state moves towards full implementation and collects data on the effectiveness of reforms, other states and local jurisdictions will continue to replace, reform or modify their bail systems to bring them into line with the fundamental principles of the rule of law.
After all, pre-trial detention through the bail system has the same different effects as the broader problem of mass incarceration. In particular, pre-trial detention affects a disproportionate number of people of colour and the poor. This is another way our system imprisons black and brown people and burdens them with short- and long-term barriers to incarceration. And as for the poor, it effectively criminalizes poverty. Bond University Law School has always had very strong ties with Fiji. Before establishing a law school at the University of the South Pacific, many Fijians visited Bond as part of a special scholarship agreement with the Fiji Business Council. As a result, Bond graduates are important in the Fijian legal community and there is a strong alumni group in Suva. But in practice, the cash deposit system has led to various problems. Obviously, this prevents the release of people who cannot afford to pay.
