As with many air bases, MCAS Beaufort hosts a public air show every two years. In April 2007, a fatal accident occurred during the show with a plane from the Blue Angels demonstration team. LSST Parris Island`s Legal Assistance Department, which provides legal advice to MCRD Parris Island, eastern recruitment region, MCAS Beaufort, MCLB Albany and MCSF Blount Island, is available for legal advice on all matters relating to the service of the Civil Assistance For Members Act, landlord and tenant issues, leases, family law, powers of attorney, estate planning and wills. Adoptions, immigration and a range of other legal issues facing military personnel, pensioners and their relatives. The aerodrome covers 6,900 hectares (28 km²). It is also connected to a large air-to-air combat zone off the coasts of South Carolina and Georgia, as well as a 5,200-acre (21 km²) air-to-ground combat and bombing zone in McIntosh County, Georgia. Also attached to the base is the Laurel Bay residential complex, just 3 miles (5 km) from the train station, which provides family accommodation for service members in the area. While legal counsel do their best to provide legal assistance and advice on any matter in their field of business, regardless of jurisdiction, the majority of the services provided by legal counsel on Parris Island are provided in Beaufort County, South Carolina. Laws, rules and procedures may vary in other jurisdictions and are always subject to change. Assistance to victims or witnesses of crimes involving military personnel is available from both the Ministry of Military Justice and Legal Assistance. The Department of Legal Administration reviews and organizes administrative separation cases and assists in the preparation of investigations under the Judge Advocate General`s Manual. Legal advice on “entrepreneurial businesses” or similar matters that are not “personal” in nature.
Assisted in filing claims for financial damages or injunctions against the United States or the Civilian UniformEd Services Health and Medicine Program (CHAMPUS)/TRICARE claims. Functions of defence counsel, including criminal counsel, section 31 (b) counsel and extrajudicial sentencing. Active duty members or active duty members above salary level E-4 may be required to provide proof of inability to perform civilian legal service in order to qualify for the position of Marine Corps Legal Counsel. The Parris Island Legal Services Support Team organizes all legal activities for the Parris Island Marine Corps Recruit Depot and the Eastern Recruit Region. It also provides military justice, defence and legal assistance functions for the Beaufort Naval Air Corps. The different sections offer a variety of legal services for orders, military and, in some cases, family members and retirees. The representative responsible for the parris Island Legal Services support team is responsible for providing legal services to directly support MCRD/ERR Parris Island, S.C.; MCAS Beaufort, South Carolina; MCLB Albany, Georgia; MCSF Blount Island, Florida; and general support to all other commands that the Legal Services Support Section – East, Marine Corps Facilities – East supports. The Legal Services Support Team and its respective services are located at 27 Atsugi Street, Building 400, Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island (between the Commissioner and the Fire Station). The legal advisory offices, which were previously located at Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort and Marine Corps Logistics Base Albany, are now part of LSST Parris Island`s legal aid department.
The Legal Aid Department provides free professional legal assistance to serving military personnel, retirees, their family members, victims of crime and certain survivors of deceased members of the armed forces in areas such as will and estate planning, family law (separation of marriage, uncontested adoptions, undisputed custody, undisputed name changes), consumer protection (consumer contracts, credit assessment issues, debts and small claims courts), immigration and naturalization, the Landlords and Tenants Act and the Military Civil Assistance Act. The “Mutual Legal Assistance” section also provides pre-posting information sessions to issuing entities. Powers of attorney and notarial services are also available. During tax season, the tax center provides free tax preparation to soldiers, reservists, family members, retirees, and survivors dependent on the military. Tax matters outside of tax season should be referred to legal advice. The 1979 film The Great Santini, based on a novel by Pat Conroy that focused on MCAS Beaufort in the early 1960s, was shot at and around the base. MCAS Beaufort, which previously hosted USMC Operations F-8 Crusader and F-4 Phantom II, currently hosts all active USMC F/A-18 air operations on the East Coast, with aircraft and squadrons assigned to Marine Aircraft Group 31 (MAG-31). MCAS Beaufort`s mission is to provide support as an operational base for the MAG-31 and its associated squadrons, Marine Corps support units and leased Navy combat squadrons. The mission of the Marine Aircraft Group (MAG-31) is to conduct air defense and offensive air support operations to support the fleet`s naval forces from forward bases, expeditionary airfields or aircraft carriers, and to conduct other air operations that can be instructed. An additional squadron of Navy F/A-18 attack fighters under the Wing Atlantic strike fighter claim at NAS Oceana, Virginia, is also stationed at MCAS Beaufort.
