VJM is a collection of multilingual terminology data in several national legal systems (24 languages and 30 legal systems) resulting from extensive comparative law research carried out by the legal-linguistic experts of the Court of Justice of the European Union. This site is maintained by the European Commission. The information contained on this page does not necessarily reflect the official position of the European Commission. The terminology data entries of the VJM contain very detailed information such as definitions (adapted to each legal system), notes on comparative law, legal references (legislation, case law and scientific legal literature of national, European and international legal systems), the different names of a term (in the same language and sometimes different depending on the legal system), a clear indication of the origin of a term (functional equivalent or wording — paraphrase), warnings (false legal friends, risk of confusion, obsolete terms), concept trees that allow to see the semantic relationships between concepts at a glance, etc. This vocabulary can be used by anyone (citizens, lawyers, students, linguists, terminologists, translators) who wants to understand a concept. It can also be useful for translation and writing purposes. It is a search engine for expressions used in all areas of activity of the European Union. It requires a more professional knowledge of the target language to be used correctly.
It is a very useful tool for professional translators, although it is not fully suitable for the general public, judicial authorities or lawyers. Therefore, translations of phrases and phrases are entered by the translators themselves to create new references or supplement existing ones. A “glossary” is an alphabetical list of terms in a particular field of knowledge, along with definitions of those terms. In the case of a bilingual glossary, terms in one language are defined in a second language or ignored by synonyms or quasi-synonyms in another language. A glossary can be understood as containing explanations of concepts relevant to a particular field of study or action. In the legal field, the term “glossary” can refer to two different instruments: on the one hand, it is used for a list of terms with translations for each country; On the other hand, it is also used for a list of definitions of terminology. Currently, VJM contains about 1,400 terminology entries: 250 in the area of immigration law (aliens` law), 450 in family law, 420 in criminal law (about half of the entries in criminal law are checked) and about 280 entries in other areas.
