The Agence d`aide juridique (LAA) was created in April 2013 to replace the Commission des services juridiques (LSC), which in turn replaced the Commission d`aide juridique in 2000. The AAL was created as part of the legal aid funding reforms introduced by the Legal Aid, Sentencing and Punishment of Offenders Act (LASPO) of 2012. It is an executive body of the Ministry of Justice that gives ministers tighter control over the government`s budget for legal aid. The AAL now shares headquarters with the Department of Justice for the small France in Westminster and has seven other offices across England. These directorates manage the distribution of public funds for civil law services and criminal defence services. The agency aims to achieve efficiencies by sharing administrative resources with the Department of Justice. In 2015/16, approximately 74 internships were offered in local governments. New funding models and the conversion of alternative business structures keep local government lawyers busy despite the cuts.

Social law legal centres are committed to providing free services to the most disadvantaged members of local communities and helping them protect their homes, families and jobs. “If you want to make a difference, this is the place to be,” says Pamela Fitzpatrick, director of the Harrow Law Centre. “Here we are trying to use the law for its most positive purpose and make a real difference for the most vulnerable. Basic services – advice and representation – are made available to the public free of charge, with funding largely coming from local authorities, the Legal Aid Agency and charitable foundations. Although the salaries offered are lower than those in private practice, the responsibilities tend to be much higher. “The trainees will find themselves in the High Court and the Court of Appeal very quickly,” says Fitzpatrick. “They certainly won`t wait long to work on interesting and high-profile cases. On the other hand, however, you don`t have the support of secretaries or receptionists like you do when working in a private practice. We do things with little money! According to the Institute of Legal Secretaries and Physician Assistants (ILSPA), taking on the role of legal secretary is suitable for anyone interested in law or with a background in administrative work. However, it is important to know that the market is currently quite full – many companies are reducing their support staff to reduce costs, and there is a lot of competition for jobs.

You`ll still get a solid legal background, but you`ll also benefit from having to think business from day one. Being part of the organization you legally represent means that “you develop a complete understanding of the business.” This, Benn says, “helps you grow both as a business consultant and as a lawyer, as the legal advice you offer is much more suited to your employer`s economic goals.” BT`s legal department consists of different specialist teams, allowing specialisation in qualification. However, with fewer hands on deck, in-house lawyers in small businesses are likely to remain generalists, at least for the first few years after graduation.

It`s best to target organizations and industries where you have the most knowledge and/or experience and check online recruitment sites regularly. One of the most interesting deals on offer is with the BBC, and other companies that hire in-house apprentices include Domino`s Pizza, JP Morgan, Mercedes Benz and Virgin Media. Many businesses choose not to post opportunities online, so to find a lead, you really need to do sophisticated footwork. We sat down with Chris Benn, then a trainee lawyer at BT, to find out more. “In my experience, advertising for in-house training contracts is certainly not widespread,” he says.
“Often, vacancies go to someone who is already employed by the company; Many of the interns I met worked as paralegals for their employers before being offered a training contract. Networking events can be a useful way to find out which companies are hiring. “Initially, I thought my only option was to train in private practice,” Benn says. “It wasn`t until I attended a graduate recruitment fair at my university that I learned there were training opportunities in places like BT.” Since we spoke to Benn, we`ve seen BT and a few other companies at a few legal shows that promote internal opportunities, so keep your eyes peeled! Rachel Stone, head of human resources at Derbyshire Constabulary, told us that “the legal department does one or two recruitment operations a year to cover a total of two or three vacancies”. Similarly, due to the reduction in public expenditure, the armed forces have chosen to abolish fixed annual revenues and instead conduct recruitment campaigns for qualified lawyers who meet the needs of the service and the amount of work coming in. As most of the more than 400 public authorities in England and Wales act as separate employers, there is no central list of vacancies or a single recruitment office. Therefore, it is a challenge in itself to inquire about training contract opportunities, as well as deciding which boards offer sponsorship for the GDL and/or LPC. Most authorities advertise vacancies on their own website or in the legal press, so these are also worth a look.
